Growing up in Hinsdale, IL, a snazzy Chicago suburb, with parents he adored, and two smart, savvy sisters, Jay excelled at tennis, golf, swimming, was an accomplished violinist and began collecting art through Merrill Chase Galleries. A passion that continues to this day.
Off to college to one of Michigan’s most prestigious and respected private institutions, Andrews University. Diploma in hand, Jay accepted a position at one of the most renowned hospitals in Portland, Oregon, where he served as Business Director for several years, eventually spearheading business development for two additional metropolitan hospitals, while serving on the Board of Directors for the Healthcare Financial Management Association. A recipient of one of the industry’s most prestigious awards for “Outstanding contributions to the Healthcare Financial Management Industry,” opportunity knocked on Jay’s door once again, so donning his entrepreneurial cap, he put his business degree acumen to use becoming both president and owner of what was soon to become one of Portland’s most well-known restaurant and nightclub hotspots.
In that all good things must come to an end, Jay’s next beginning involved exploiting his empirical expertise, as he was offered the District Manager position for American Express Financial Advisors, now Ameriprise Financial, which specializes in retirement financial planning for high net worth clients. Jay’s efforts were lauded and championed, and he soon became Managing Principal for the Portland marketplace, where he had the honorable distinction of being recognized as the #1 Management Team for American Express in the entire country.
Inspired after several trips to Southern California and after selling his practice, his home, his lake house and boat, Jay decided to relocate together with his partner of 27 years to the “Land of the Rich & Famous!”—Palm Springs. This quaint, cosmopolitan, artistic city instantly felt like home to Jay. Business-wise, because he was seduced by the internationally renowned architecture, Jay and his partner began purchasing properties from a majestic home in Rancho Mirage’s Thunderbird Heights to charming condos and stylish homes in Palm Springs, and eventually had multiple real estate development projects in production simultaneously, qualifying them as certifiable serial ‘flippers!’
Having carved out what almost instantly became a lucrative real estate niche, in order to maximize profits, and aware that ‘money was being left on the table,’ Jay became a licensed real estate agent and signed with his first brokerage firm, Coldwell Banker. He subsequently also became a Broker in Oregon, affiliating with an upscale boutique Coastal firm where he and his partner spend part of the summer at their beach retreat. Today, Jay and his colleague, James Ronald Whitney, the principal partners of Saufl/Whitney Group, aka The Bluejays, operate out of two Palm Springs’ office locations of Bennion Deville Homes (formerly Windermere), a member of Luxury Portfolio International®, ranking #1 in both Listings and Sales throughout California’s Coachella Valley.
